First Half-Marathon DONE!

Great news everyone! I’m still alive

First of all, the bad news: I totally forgot to drink my 5 hour energy!!! OHHHH NOOO! I really do believe it had a negative impact on my run, but that’s ok! I still finished the race with the pace that I wanted (under 10 minutes/mile)!!

What a BEAUTIFUL day for a half! It was 50 degrees, clear skies, and warmed up to almost 70 by the time we finished. My bandana kept me sweat-free on the face (except for my nose).

Let me remind you of the elevation I was dealing with (from my super-awesome and accurate Garmin):

Yeah, that’s a few rolling hills. Turns out I deal with them pretty well. I kept telling myself “same effort, slower pace. You got this.”

That spike at 4.5 miles was INTENSE, and I think it really thinned out the crowd. It sucked, but I made it and even ran my fastest mile after that.

Here’s the route:

I didn’t care for the out-and-back business or the part where we ran the golf course, but other than that, I really enjoyed the scenery, the people on the course, and running along side my greatest motivator and support system, Dan.

Pace break dizzown:

Mile 1: 9:51

Mile 2: 9:50

Mile 3: 9:48

Mile 4: 9:43

Mile 5: 10:00 (Huge hill)

Mile 6: 10:04 (gu intake)

Mile 7: 9:34

Mile 8: 9:15 (downhill)

Mile 9: 10:03 (totally unmotivated on the “back” part of the out-and-back, and feeling a bit queasy from all the gu)

Mile 10: 10:01

Mile 11: 9:44

Mile 12: 10:20 (walked for a minute)

Mile 13: 9:37

Last 0.1: 9:00 (flat—got down to a 7:50 sprint to the finish).

Obviously I did not run a negative split, which I was kind of hoping to:

First half: 54:20

Second half: 63:44

I started getting a stitch around mile 4, and it stuck with me through the entire race. Total bummer, but I powered through. :)

Well, my goal for the next one is to run negative splits, and I won’t forget my 5 hour energy ever again!

Live music and towels (which we definitely did gratuitous stretching on. What was interesting was how people were staring. I mean, is it really that odd for runners to do assisted stretching after a race??)

Anyway, I’m really happy and pleased and even more motivated and ready to start training for a full! I want to get stronger and faster! Let’s do this!
